Empirical Docs / Getting Started

Workspaces.

A workspace is a separate memory that you and your team share. This page is for anyone who just created or joined one: how to connect ChatGPT, Claude or the CLI to it, and how to switch between workspaces later.

What a workspace is

Everyone has a personal workspace for things that follow only them. A team workspace holds what a project, client or team needs to share: everyone in it reads the same memories, and what one person's assistant saves, the others' assistants can find. Your tools read from and write to one workspace at a time, so personal context and team context do not mix.

One sign-in covers all of them: You do not connect a tool once per workspace. Connect it once, then switch. Every workspace you belong to is available from the same connection.

Connect ChatGPT or Claude

Add the Empirical app in ChatGPT, or the Empirical connector in Claude. When you sign in, the screen has a Select workspace list: pick the workspace you want this assistant to use. It shows your personal workspace and every team workspace you are a member of.

  • ChatGPT: add the Empirical app, then sign in and pick the workspace
  • Claude web app: add the custom connector, then sign in and pick the workspace
  • Already connected? You do not need to sign in again. Switch instead (next section)

Switch workspaces in an assistant

Ask in plain words. The assistant lists the workspaces you belong to and switches to the one you name. The switch applies to that assistant only: ChatGPT and Claude each keep their own selection, so switching one does not move the other.

You: Switch to the Fieldnotes workspace.

# What the assistant calls
list_workspaces()
set_current_workspace({ workspaceKey: "<key from list_workspaces>" })

Switch workspaces in the CLI

Install the CLI once, then pick a workspace. Inside a git repository, workspace use binds that project to the workspace, so other repositories are unaffected; add --global to make it your machine-wide default.

npm install -g @empirical-gauzza/cli
empirical install
empirical workspace list
empirical workspace use "Fieldnotes" # inside a repo: binds this project
empirical workspace use "Fieldnotes" --global # machine-wide default

Check which workspace is active

Ask your assistant which workspace it is using, or run empirical workspace current in the terminal. If a search returns nothing for something you know is there, check the active workspace first: it is almost always the wrong workspace, not a missing memory.

empirical workspace current

# In an assistant
get_current_workspace()

Membership is required: You can only switch to a workspace you are a member of. If one is missing from the list, ask its owner for an invite.
